Dhaka North City Corporation will allocate the budget for tobacco control
Chief Health Officer of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Brig. Gen. Md Mominur Rahman Mamun has expressed his commitment to allocate the budget for tobacco control and will be operated more mobile court under DNCC. On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day 2019, Today (May 30, 2019) he made this commitment at the meeting titled ‘Tobacco Control Law implementation progress and future action’ organized by DNCC and Dhaka Ahsania Mission to make the tobacco control program more dynamic at 1.30 PM in the DNCC Gulshan-2 seminar room.
One of the main and preventable causes of premature death and disease are the use of tobacco. According to Tobacco Atlas-2018, 1, 61,200 people die for tobacco-related diseases each year. Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) was approved in 2003 to reduce tobacco use globally. Bangladesh is the first signatory country of this agreement and in its continuation, Bangladesh Government enacted the Smoking and Tobacco Products (Control) Act in 2005 and subsequently amended the law in 2013. According to the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) 2017, 43% of people are exposing by second-hand smoking in indoor workplaces. Public transportation (44%), government institutions and buildings (21.6%) and restaurants (49.7%) are being subjected to indirect smoking. To prevent people from harmful effects of indirect smoking, the existing law prohibits smoking at all public places. Dhaka Ahsania Mission (DAM) has been implementing tobacco control program for a long time besides other social development activities and implement various tobacco control. In order to implement the Tobacco Control Act in Dhaka City, DAM has been implementing various tobacco control activities with Dhaka South and North City Corporation since 2013.
Dhaka North City Corporation has initiated various measures to control tobacco, in which smoke-free removal guidelines are one of the most important. This discussion meeting was held to review the progress of the DNCC’s tobacco-free guideline and implementation of tobacco control law. Today’s discussion meeting supported by Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. The meeting was chaired by Chief Health Officer of Dhaka North City Corporation Brig. Gen. Md Mominur Rahman Mamun. The special guest was Chief Executive Officer of Savar Municipality Saraf Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury and Assistant Director of Dhaka Ahsania Mission Md. Mukhlesur Rahman presented the keynote paper. moderated the meeting. In the meeting, Secretary of Dhaka North City Corporation, the Divisional Heads, Zonal Executives, DNCC Executive Magistrate, Assistant Health Officers of DNCC zone-1,2,3,4, and 5, Health Officers, Health Inspector of Dhaka North City Corporation and anti-tobacco NGOs officials representative took part in the meeting
