World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims Observed by Dhaka Ahsania Mission

There is nothing more precious than life, road accidents take away that life, the number of road accidents is increasing every year. Today is “World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims” Day. Candles were lit at Asad Gate at 6.00 pm in observance of the day and raise public awareness, draw the attention of government and law enforcement agencies and commemorate those who died in road accidents. The event was organized by Health Sector, Dhaka Ahsania Mission. Director of Health and WASH Sector, Dhaka Ahsania Mission Iqbal Masud, Assistant Director Md. Mukhlesur Rahman and Heads & officials of various institutes and projects of the Health Sector doctors, nurses and other health workers were present at this time.

According to the World Health Organization, an average of 55 people is died in road accidents in Bangladesh every day. In 2019, the number of road accidents in the country has increased a lot. Compared to 2018, the number of road accidents has increased by 1,599 in 2019. In 2018, total 4,039 people were died and 6,425 injured in 3,103 road accidents. In 2019, there were 4,602 road accidents. 5,228 people died and 8,953 people were injured. The highest number of 309 road accidents occurred in the capital Dhaka (Source: Nirapod Sorok Chai Organization’s Report). People are constantly facing accidents in various ways including pushing from behind, lack of knowledge about Road Safety Acts, use of mobiles in road and when crossing, zebra crossings, underpasses, not using footover bridges for crossing the road, frequent crossings etc. Besides, uneducated and untrained drivers, faulty vehicles, poor traffic management, lack of awareness, uncontrolled speed, errors in road construction, improper implementation of law are also the main causes of road accidents.

Through this event, the officers and staffs of DAM-Health Sector were displayed some hand placers with some urges; like- obeying traffic signals to reduce accidents, not parking everywhere, avoid dangerous overtaking, ensure safety on the road, drive transports carefully on the road, proper implementation of the law are essential. Safe roads are the rights of the people and it is the responsibility of the government to ensure road safety.
