Prevention of HIV among IDUs through comprehensive drug & STI treatment in Dhaka- Modhumita Project

In 2005, the FHI funded Modhumita project was established to assist IDU’s who are from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Located in the densely populated area of Old Dhaka where drug use is prevalent and where a concentrated epidemic of HIV amongst IDU’s has been noted, the centre aims to provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient drug treatment and rehabilitation for male IDUs. Like the Ahsania Mission Drug Addiction and Treatment Centre, the centre uses the integrated approach of therapeutic community and Narcotics Anonymous (NA). The centre also organizes self-help groups, provides vocational skills, job placement and links clients with micro-credit facilities to promote a smoother re-integration back into society. One of its main aims is to develop a continuum of care by creating referral mechanisms with partner agencies and other service agencies. Counselors are present to provide psychosocial support to clients, their families and to further motivate their rehabilitation and rebuild familial relationships. Additionally they are provided with life training skills and on relapse prevention.
