National Convention on Disaster Management 2017
The “National Convention on Disaster Management 2017” was held at Bangabandhu International Conference Center of Dhaka on 30-31 July 2017 organized by Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief (MoDMR). The Convention was inaugurated by Mr. Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury (Maya) Bir Bikram, the Honorable Minister for the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief (MoDMR) and the honorable Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Ministry of Disaster Management & Relief (SCMoDMR), Mr. Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu and other members of SCMODMR like Mr. Talukdar Abdul Khalek, MP; Mr. ABM Mozammale Haque, MP; Mr. Abdur Rahman Badi, MP were the Special Guests of the Convention. The convention was chaired by Mr. Md. Shah Kamal, the Honorable Secretary of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief (MoDMR), Mr. Md. Reaz Ahmed, the Director General of the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) has given his speech about current emergency response initiatives of DDM and future disaster management planning. In the convention, Vice-Chancellor of University of Asia Pacific Prof. Jamilur Reza Choudhury was present as the key note presenter of the convention. In the convention different types of events have been planned to make the program more colorful. There were six hazard specific workshops, side events and installed stalls by different GO, NGOs, INGOs, consortium, private sectors, etc. Dhaka Ahsania Mission and Oxfam jointly installed a stall and DAM also represented the stall of National Alliance of Humanitarian Actors, Bangladesh (NAHAB).
Dr. M. Ehsanur Rahman, Executive Director of Dhaka Ahsania Mission was present as one of the Panel Discussant of a side event named “Strengthening of Level Disaster Management Committees”. In the convention, he recommended “Disaster Management is not only the responsibilities of MoDM&R, local leaders are the first responders and that’s why an environment needs to create where people will have the freedom, skill and opportunity to take the decision locally”.
