H71 Project- Prison Intervention

HIV/AIDs within the prison population present a serious health threat not only internally but also to the broader community. Prisons are often overcrowded, drug abuse is prevalent and sexual activities occur. With the financial assistance of UNODC-ROSA a pilot intervention was incepted in 2005 and this enabled AMIC to organize two national trainings and develop national trainers creating a peer led intervention programme. A further 110 participants (10 prison staff and 100 inmates) were able to be trained by national trainers at a site specific training at Gazipur District Jail. Senior peer volunteers (SPV) and peer volunteers (PV) were created and PV (managed by SPV) regularly educated their peers on HIV/AIDs and drug abuse.
