BSOA will take steps to stop tobacco advertisement and single stick cigarette selling

“Steps to be taken soon to stop tobacco advertisement and selling of single stick cigarette”, said the President of Bangladesh Shop Owners Association (BSOA) Mr Md Helal Uddin while he was addressing as the Chief Guest of a meeting. Bangladesh Shop Owners Association (BSOA) and Dhaka Ahsania Mission (DAM) jointly organized a discussion meeting today – 20 July, at BSOA Office in Maghbazar, Dhaka with the assistance of Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids (CTFK). The “Big Tobacco, Tiny Target, Bangladesh” survey report was presented to the audience at the event, which was presided by BSOA Vice-President Mr Abdul Qauiyum Talukder. Mr Talukder said that in order to build a tobacco-free Bangladesh by 2040, BSOA will take necessary actions to ban selling cigarettes within 100 yards of educational institutions and playgrounds. The welcome speech delivered by the General Secretary of BSOA, Mr Md Jahirul Haque Bhuiyan. Savar Municipality Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Sharaf Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury and Grants Manager of CTFK Mr. Abdus Salam Miah were present as Special Guest. Representatives from different markets in and out of Dhaka, Program Officer of National Tobacco Control Cell (NTCC) Mr. Nabin Ekram and representatives from WBB Trust, UBING, and TCRC were present at the event. The keynote paper on the needful to prohibit tobacco industry promotions and “Big Tobacco, Tiny Target, Bangladesh” survey report were presented by Mr Md Mukhlesur Rahman, Assistant Director and Tobacco Control Project Coordinator, Dhaka Ahsania Mission.

The Speakers also stressed to combine all efforts for stronger implementation of Smoking and Tobacco (Control) Law and thus saving our younger generation from tobacco harms which will also contribute to materialize our honorable Prime Minister declared to make Bangladesh a tobacco free country within 2040.
