Project Introduction:
Kalaroa is a small coastal town designated as a B category Paurashava which is home to 28645 people, among whom most of them endure intense poverty along with water and sanitation problems. This is one of the highest Arsenic contaminated urban areas in the country. Dhaka Ahsania Mission, in regard to its experience in WASH in Urban areas and long-term engagement in Satkhira district, started to implement a project named AmaderKalaroaProject(WASH in small towns). The main objective of the project is to establish a sustainable service delivery model developed to increase access to WASH facilities of the people living in KalaroaPaurashava in focus of its coastal nature and possible climate change impact, through building capacity of the Paurashava, educational and local institutions and other service providers influencing toward pro-poor policy; and increase investments for Community Managed Sustainable WASH

Overall Objective:By end of the project a Pourashava led community managed sustainable service delivery model for small coastal town developed to increase access to WaSH of the people living in KalaroaPaurashava through building capacity of the Pourashava and other service providers influencing rights based approach toward pro-poor policy; and increase investments for Community Managed sustainable WaSH in focus of coastal nature and possible climate change impact.

Specific Objectives:

  • Devising a model of Community Managed sustainable WaSH for service delivery by the Paurashava Council involving the community to increase access to WaSH of the coastal citizen
  • Enhancing capacity of the Paurashava Council to respond the demands of the citizen especially poor, slum duelers and the disadvantaged
  • Empowerment of community people to place rights-based demand for sustainable water supply and environmental sanitation services to the Paurashava and other service providers
  • Community behavior change in promoting hygiene, water safety, sanitation and gender responsiveness
  • Improvement of water, sanitation and hygiene situation in schools (WINs) and educational institutions within the Pourashava
  • Influencing policy/strategy and institutional reforms to ease access to water and sanitation services for the coastal urban people.

Outputs:

  • Poor and disadvantaged people including children in small towns can enforce their rights to improve their WaSH service.
  • Participants of communities in local level planning and collaboration enhanced.
  • Pro-poor planning and implementation capacity of the Pourashava’s to extend WaSh service / coverage increased.
  • Environmental sanitation in targeted Pourashava’s improved.

Project Components:Hard ware installation, Community mobilization, Capacity building, Awareness raising program, MHM piloting, WASH rights ensuring.

Major Activities:School, community & public latrine installation, Water option installation, Para committee & WLCC training, Para committee meeting, WLCC meeting, Hygiene session, CSA review, Campaign, School hygiene session, MHM session, Food hygiene monitoring.
